What I Pack for a Kombi Road Trip | NZ Kombi Hire

Hitting the road in Aggiee

People often ask what I pack for a Kombi road trip when heading off in Aggiee, our trusty old VW Kombi. After years of adventures across New Zealand’s South Island, I’ve learned the art of travelling light – and the joy of doing more with less.

When you’re on a South Island roadie – whether it’s through the stunning central lakes of the Mackenzie Country, or heading over Arthur’s Pass to wind your way through the wild West Coast bush roads – every item you bring should earn its place. Overpacking just steals the space you’ll want for memories, snacks, and maybe a bottle (or three) of Central Otago pinot noir from Māori Point Wines.

Kombi life teaches you that less really is more.

Learning the Hard Way

We packed far too many clothes, had extra cutlery and kitchen gadgets that you can, in reality, make do without (except the coffee plunger – that’s a necessity! And yes, we provide one in Rhonda and Pippi too).

After every trip, we’d unpack and talk about what we actually used – or didn’t – what we wore, or not – and the next time we’d refine it a bit more. It’s funny how travelling in a Kombi teaches you what’s essential and what’s just taking up space. Over time, we’ve learned to choose comfort, practicality, and ease.

If you’re planning your own South Island adventure and wondering what to pack for a Kombi road trip, the trick is to keep it simple – comfort always wins.

Kombi Packing for Those Who Like a Few Outfit Options

I know plenty of people who can throw a few things into a bag and be ready to roll – my man included! He swears by this formula:
“A couple of pairs of shorts and jeans, a few tees, tanks, a good shirt and boots to go out for dinner – plus the good old jandals, of course.”

I, on the other hand, like a little variety. Over time I’ve refined my Kombi wardrobe down to a simple, practical capsule that still feels like me – and doesn’t take over the van!

Clothing – Layers and Natural Fibres

My number one tip is layering and natural fibres – merino is ideal, and we’re lucky here in New Zealand to have easy access to it. You get what you pay for, and for soft, non-itchy merino, my go-tos are Glowing Sky or Icebreaker.

Jeans are a good all-rounder – hard-wearing denim will last the course, and that’s why I pack both jeans and jean shorts. You can’t go wrong with a denim skirt either – mini or knee-length, whatever’s your jam.

Cotton tees roll up well and un-crease easily, as does merino. A cute skirt works for day or evening wear – I pick colours that tone in with my tops, which are a mix of cotton, bamboo, merino, and linen. My cropped khaki vest layers perfectly over a maxi dress for a relaxed evening vibe.

Minimal jewellery is my thing (I’m notorious for losing it!), so I take just a small mix that goes with everything – costume jewellery is fabulous these days, and the diamonds can safely stay at home.

Sneakers and jandals are all you need for footwear, plus a sun hat. And because the weather in New Zealand can be unpredictable even in summer, a lightweight puffer jacket and a packable rain jacket are always on my list.

“Packing cells are lifesavers.”

The one pictured in my kit is double-sided – tops and skirt/dress on one side, jeans, shorts, and jackets on the other. I picked mine up from Kathmandu, which has loads of great travel gadgets and outdoor gear.

And of course, if you’re more into serious hiking, you’ll want to add extra gear.

A maxi dress works perfectly for daywear or a casual evening out. I pack sandals that are dressy but comfy – no heels in my luggage for van life! Add a big square scarf – it’s an instant dress-up or cover-up from the sun, and doubles as a blanket for those cosy Kombi evenings.

Cooking & food

Rhonda and Pippi come with everything you need for preparing meals – crockery, utensils, pots, and pans – but no food or condiments. The first thing we’ll do when you pick up your van is point you towards the supermarket so you can stock up on whatever you fancy for the trip.

I never hit the road without my coffee plunger – that’s one thing I can’t do without! There’s nothing better than brewing a proper coffee in the morning and taking it outside to enjoy the view.

Moments that matter

There’s nothing quite like waking up in Aggiee, sliding open the door, and seeing the morning light on the hills. Some days we sit quietly with our coffees, watching the mist lift off the lake. Other times, it’s chatting with other campers about where they’ve been and swapping a few travel stories.

Those are the moments that stay with me – not the things I packed, but the space we made for the memories.

“It’s amazing how little you actually need once you’re on the road.”
