Section 1: Booking & Rates

How much does it cost to hire a Kombi?

  • Cooking gear, utensils, crockery, kitchen linen
  • Mattress + 2 blankets
  • Fridge, USB ports, gas cooker
  • Linen package is optional

What’s included in the daily hire rate?

  • Fill in the booking form on our site
  • Pay a $250 deposit (via Stripe)
  • Balance due 2 weeks before pickup

How do I book a Kombi?

  • $1,500 held as a pre-authorisation on your credit card 5 days before pickup
  • Released in full when the Kombi is returned undamaged

What’s the bond?

Section 2: Driving & Safety

  • Yes. All our Kombis are manual - at least one driver must be confident driving a stick shift.

Do I need to know how to drive a manual?

  • Yes. No off-road tracks, beaches, riverbeds, or the Crown Range Road (Queenstown–Wanaka) and other prohibited roads listed in our T&Cs.
  • DOC gravel access roads are fine.

Are there any roads I can’t take a Kombi on?

  • Allow 30–45 minutes for a full walkthrough and induction
  • We’ll go through everything - driving tips, gas, power, storage, and answer any questions.

How long does pickup take?

  • Soft bags or packing cells work best (easier to store)
  • Avoid hard-shell suitcases - but we can store them at our Alexandra base while you're away
  • You'll receive a full packing guide after booking

Section 3: Travel & Gear

What should I pack for a Kombi road trip?

  • Call Warren first - we’ll help troubleshoot or arrange support through our Roadside Assistance cover.

What happens if we break down?

  • No. Kombi roofs are vintage fibreglass - not safe to sit or stand on.
  • Climbing on the roof = $500 minimum fine and potential damage.

Can we sit or stand on the roof?

Section 4: Getting to Alexandra

We operate on a return-to-base system from Alexandra in Central Otago, which is just over an hour from Queenstown Airport.There are several easy ways to get here, depending on your budget and travel style.

How do I get to Alexandra to pick up the Kombi?

This is the option most of our travellers choose.

• We pick you up from there
• Affordable, reliable and runs daily

InterCity Bus – most popular and budget friendly

A convenient private shuttle service between Queenstown and Alexandra.
Approx $250 NZD per van each way.
Ideal for small groups or those wanting a direct transfer.

Shuttle Plus

When they have airport spaces available, Bike It Now offer:
• Pickup from Queenstown Airport
• Drop off in Clyde (10 minutes from us)
• We collect you from Clyde

A great option if their schedule aligns with yours.


Bike It Now

A door-to-door transfer service from Queenstown to Alexandra.

Perfect if you prefer to be collected directly from your accommodation.

  • Yes! Digital (instant) and Printed gift vouchers available

Do you offer gift vouchers?

  • Yes. Retro enamel Kombi pins (Rhonda, Pippi, Aggiee colours available) - $15 each at pickup or return

We’re based in Alexandra for South Island road trips.
